Information we collect

Newsletter subscribers

When you subscribe to the North Coast Insider newsletter, we collect your email address and, optionally, your area of interest. We use this only to send you the newsletter you signed up for.

Business listing submissions

When you submit a business listing, we collect your name, email address, phone number, and business details (name, address, category, website, social media). This information is used to review and publish your listing on Saltist.

Usage data

We collect anonymised analytics data via Google Analytics 4 — this includes pages visited, time on site, and general location (city/country level). No personally identifiable information is included. We also record listing view and click events (phone, website, directions) to help business owners understand their listing performance. These events are tied to a listing slug, not to a specific person.

Payment information

Payments for paid listings are processed by Yoco. We do not store your card details. Yoco's privacy policy applies to payment processing.

How we use your information

  • To send you the newsletter you subscribed to
  • To review, communicate about, and publish your business listing
  • To provide listing performance insights to business owners
  • To improve the directory and understand how visitors use the site
  • To comply with our legal obligations

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties for marketing purposes.

How long we keep your data

  • Newsletter subscribers: until you unsubscribe, after which we delete your email within 30 days.
  • Listing submissions: retained for the duration of the business relationship, plus up to 3 years thereafter.
  • Analytics data: retained for 14 months in Google Analytics 4 (GA4 default).

Your rights under POPIA

The Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) gives South African residents the right to:

  • Know what personal information we hold about you
  • Request correction of inaccurate information
  • Request deletion of your personal information
  • Object to the processing of your personal information
  • Lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator

To exercise any of these rights, email us at hello@saltist.co.za. We will respond within 21 days.

Cookies

We use cookies for Google Analytics (anonymised usage data). No personally identifiable information is stored in cookies. You can disable cookies in your browser settings, though this may affect site functionality.
